RESIDENT LIFE

When residents match at HennepinEM, they become a part of a legacy of compassionate patient care, innovation, and advancement within the field of emergency medicine. They also become a member of a family and community.

Most of our residents live nearby the hospital downtown or in surrounding neighborhoods such as Northeast, North Loop, or Uptown. Some residents live a bit farther out in Bloomington, St. Paul, and other nearby cities but they are still mostly within a 20-30 minute drive away. Some residents choose to live in apartment complexes while others find great houses to rent or buy.

There is a lot to do in and around the Twin Cities and our residents love getting outside all year round! There are plenty of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. There are also plenty of lakes nearby for kayaking, paddle-boarding, fishing, ice fishing, and sailing. Near and far, there are numerous great campsites to be found in Minnesota state parks. When we get a chance to venture out a little farther, there’s always the Boundary Waters, the North Shore, and the Apostle Islands to explore!

SENSE OF COMMUNITY

One question we are often asked is, “do your residents spend time with one another outside of work?” And the answer is, “Yeah, you betcha!” You can find us together at breweries, baseball games, parks, and at each other’s homes, to name a few.

Furthermore, the program recognizes how important having a sense of community and belonging is to the wellbeing of our residents. As a result, we have several residency sponsored events for residents with protected time-off. Some of these events include the annual resident-selected retreat (usually some kind of rafting, tubing, or other water sport), the post-ITE (In-Training Exam) cool-down, the Women In EM Bike Ride, and interns attending the SAEM Annual Meeting.

About Us

The Department of Emergency Medicine is comprised of the physicians, physician-assistants and staff dedicated to the delivery of emergency medical services for HCMC. Emergency Medicine Faculty physicians provide emergency medical care, teach students of many types, and conduct research leading to innovation of emergency care.

Our Residency Program in Emergency Medicine, its residents, and its graduates are a source of great pride for our Department. It began in 1972 with two residents, years before recognition of the discipline of Emergency Medicine as a medical specialty. Today we match twelve residents per year in our three-year program.
