Rose Beranek, DO

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: Arlington Heights, IL

Undergrad: University of Kentucky

Medical School: Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Interests/Hobbies: I’m a big animal lover. I fostered cats growing up and fostered about a dozen while in med school. I love spending my free time with friends, either adventuring or just hanging out together. I enjoy baking challenging recipes when I have the time (I just went through a big cheesecake phase). My husband and I also love to try trying new restaurants, breweries, or distilleries in the area.

Why HCMC? During my rotation at HCMC I saw that the residents there were unparalleled in their capabilities. I was so impressed by everyone I worked with, and I knew that getting to train with these residents and staff would push me to the absolute best physician I can be. HCMC has everything I wanted in a residency program including being a safety net county program, having top physicians in their fields who are always striving for better care for patients and better improvements in medicine, and residents that feel like family, who love and are passionate about what they do.

Dan Bollinger, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: Baltimore, MD

Undergrad: Carleton College

Medical School: University of Colorado School of Medicine

Interests/Hobbies: I love hiking, camping, rock climbing, downhill skiing, cooking and photography! I can’t say I love to cross country ski, but now that I’m back in MN that may have to change…

Why HCMC? I was drawn to HCMC for a variety of reasons. Minnesota feels like a second home to me, so I am really looking forward to working with people that have welcomed me and returning the favor. I also want to work with patients from various cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds and I think HCMC offers great training in how to best address many of the health concerns that face these vulnerable populations. I did a rotation with HCMC during my 4th year of medical school and felt like I connected with the residents and faculty there, and I was drawn to the community and collaborative atmosphere that I saw in the residency atmosphere.

Nelson Chen, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: Greenbelt, MD

Undergrad: University of Maryland, College Park

Interests/Hobbies: I love to cook and bake for friends and family. In my free time, I enjoy exploring nearby eateries and coffee spots, always on the lookout for new flavors and experiences. Recently, I have gotten into skiing and am eager to hit the slopes in Minnesota! Keeping active is a big part of my life, whether it’s going for a run, hopping on my bike, or just immersing myself in nature through hiking and outdoor adventures.

Why HCMC? I chose HCMC for its diverse patient population and commitment to serving underserved communities. HCMC offers me the opportunity to explore my interests while honing crucial skills and allowing the opportunity to be in the Pit boss role. HCMC’s comprehensive training will prepare me to practice in any healthcare environment in the future.

Logan Gunderson, MD

I’m a bit of a hobby hopper, always up for trying out new things. Introducing me to a new hobby? I’m in!

Why HCMC? I walked away from my Hennepin interview being extremely impressed by its comprehensive and hands-on training. This time-tested program seemed to have the components needed to create extremely competent EM physicians who are prepared for any situation. I couldn’t be happier to be a part of a supportive, challenging program that focuses on providing high-quality care not only to the underserved, but to all members of the community.

Emmy Inwards, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: Roseville, MN

I’m usually reading fiction, but also enjoy nonfiction, particularly history! In the last few years, I’ve also discovered a love for cooking and baking, and now I’m addicted to the NYT cooking app.

Why HCMC? After my rotation, I knew Hennepin was the exact program I was looking for. It has everything I want: a county program dedicated to their diverse patient population, a tight-knit, passionate group of residents, and stellar clinical training at an institution that has been at the forefront of EM since the inception of the field. In addition, the Twin Cities are, humbly, the best place to live! I get the culture of a big city, yet also cool walkable/bikeable neighborhoods that are surrounded by green spaces and lakes.

Vi Nguyen, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: Brooklyn Park, MN

Undergrad: University of Wisconsin – Madison

I am also a huge football fan and love going to Vikings games. When I have the opportunity, I love to travel. My favorite countries I have visited are Vietnam and Japan.

Why HCMC? At Hennepin, I have the privilege to care for a diverse and underserved patient population while also training to become an excellent EM physician. Working in a busy county ED that emphasizes autonomy and leadership through the unique Pit Boss role, I know I will be well prepared after residency. The faculty and residents are also so supportive here and there is a strong sense of community. Hennepin has everything that I would want in a residency program!

Why HCMC? Too many reasons to count! The people at HCMC are incredible. The culture and values of the hospital to care for the most vulnerable and underserved populations. The high-acuity, high-volume and autonomy that will prepare me well for anything in the future. I also previously worked as one of the ED research coordinators and as a scribe so Hennepin is home to me.

Kath Rivera, MD

Hometown: Bridgeport, CT

Undergrad: Brandeis University

Medical School: Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University

Interests/Hobbies: Going to music shows, spending time with my loved ones, checking out new restaurants and bars with my partner

Why HCMC? HCMC’s active commitment to social EM stood out to me more than any other program. This coupled with excellent clinical training including the unique pit boss role really drew me to HCMC.

Why HCMC? HCMC is the best program in the best city! Not only do they provide a fantastic education to their residents to make them the most capable doctors, but they are also committed to providing the best care to the diverse people of the Twin Cities with dignity and empathy. Finally, throughout my audition and interview season in medical school, I did not find a group of people that cared more about each other than the residents and staff at HCMC. Not only were they incredibly kind but also fiercely loyal to even the medical student from Ohio who just wanted to be one of them!

Why HCMC? I completed an away rotation at Hennepin last summer and was in awe of the residents’ and attendings’ dedication to providing the best care possible to patients. I knew that if I could train at Hennepin, I would leave residency confident and knowledgeable about every aspect of Emergency Medicine. I am so excited to be joining an amazing community at Hennepin!

Brianna Zenk, MD

Why HCMC? I first visited HCMC during undergrad while shadowing, and I remember thinking I would be so lucky to end up here someday. That sentiment still held true when I rotated here for my Away during medical school. The staff care deeply about their patients, and the institution has the resources to support their needs. The faculty are incredible teachers that support and encourage the residents and medical students. I chose HCMC because I know it is where I could grow to be the physician I want to become.
