CLASS OF 2022

Arjun Arya, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown:  Rolling Meadows, Illinois

Undergrad: University of Illinois Chicago

Medical School: University of Illinois College of Medicine

Interests/Hobbies:  I love going to the gym. Otherwise I like to read, make bad puns and worse dad jokes, eat, hang out w/ friends & family and try new things. I also dabble in photography.

Why HCMC? I believe HCMC is where the future of EM is being crafted everyday by people who keep challenging the boundaries of what is possible. Here I get the opportunity to grow into the best version of myself while simultaneously giving my best to our team and to our patients. To better healthcare, we first have to believe it’s possible. HCMC takes possible and from it makes probable. Being a part of that process has always been the dream.

Alec Bunting, DO

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown: West Des Moines, IA

Undergrad: University of Iowa

Medical School: Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Interests/Hobbies:  In my free time I enjoy running, hiking, traveling, cooking, reading, watching TV/movies on the numerous streaming services I subscribe to, trying new restaurants/breweries/wineries. Of course, all of those activities are even more enjoyable with my friends, family, and girlfriend, Liz.

Why HCMC? When I rotated at HCMC, I was impressed not only by the high volume of diverse patient presentations, but also by the wealth of knowledge among residents and faculty to address any of those diverse complaints that came to the ED. I consistently felt challenged to improve my practice every day and knew that I was learning directly from several leaders in emergency medicine. I was also impressed by the ultrasound curriculum, the consistent implementation of innovative emergency care, and the overall autonomy of the EM residents. I wanted to train somewhere that would prepare me to handle any patient that came to the ED while also permitting me to be on the forefront of emergency medical care, and I am confident the training at HCMC will help me achieve those goals and more!

Michael Fischer, MD

Emergency Medicine Resident

Hometown:  Sussex, WI

Undergrad: University of Wisconsin, Madison

Medical School: New York Medical College

Interests/Hobbies:  If I’m outdoors hiking, playing pick up sports, exploring new restaurants or breweries, cooking, watching my Green Bay Packers, or traveling, I’m in my happy place.

Why HCMC? I felt the “gut feeling” during the resident social and knew I would fit right in. Along with the work hard, play hard attitude, I knew HCMC would push me to become the EM doctor I want to become.

More recently, I have been enjoying helping Anton with our remodel and landscaping projects around the house.

Why HCMC? There are many reasons that I felt HCMC was a perfect fit for residency. First, through my undergrad time I both volunteered at scribed at HCMC and loved the patient population and the hospital itself. In addition, I really wanted to come home to Minnesota for residency and be closer to my family.

I have always been proud/impressed by the fact that any and all people who walk through the doors of HCMC, no matter their socioeconomic status, race, immigration status, language etc. can get world class care. As a medical student rotating at Hennepin, my childhood ambitions were further confirmed by the dedication to education and the supportive community of providers and employees. I am truly honored and incredibly excited to be part of HCMC!

Why HCMC? When applying to residency, I knew I wanted a program that had been ingrained in the community and around for quite some time. Additionally, I was looking for a hands-on experience with cutting edge medicine. HCMC provides some of the best emergency medicine training in the country. After my audition rotation during the fourth year of medical school, I saw how competent, knowledgeable, confident, compassionate (etc.) the entire resident team was; it was a no brainer to rank HCMC #1. I really liked the STAB room and trauma experience. It was a bonus to have ED faculty, other specialties, and ancillary staff that was just as awesome as the rest of the team. Growing up in Minnesota, being close to family was also very important to my wife and me. Matching at HCMC was literally a dream come true!

Otherwise sipping a drink on a patio with friends is my preferred place to be.

Why HCMC? So many reasons! The unparalleled combination of academics, mentorship, patient acuity, and the pit boss role. Also, Hennepin’s patient population is a prime example of how global can be local.
